Same saying in German. I'd actually would have bought the game today if there was a single fucking store in the inner city that sells PC games that are NOT several weeks old. Actually I looked on the internet and the only PC game stores left here are at the outskirts, which is a bit far to walk for a PC game. Guess I'll go back to the plan to get it this weekend, if Carpets critique is reasonably positive. I also took a look at (legal) digital downloads but, well, I simply don't trust those for a full game.

When would you guys actually intend to play COOP day-time-wise? Or should I rather inquire if I'm even admitted Mr. Green

PS: Carpet, didn't you mention your system is below minimum specs? Hell one digital download site even mentioned a Geforce 7800 to be minimum - which I personally assume as being a mistake by them..

My Video card isn't the problem, I have a pretty new Asus Geforce 9600 GT HTDI, which does pretty good in benchmarks.

Problem is the CPU, wikipedia lists minimum specs as:
Quote:
Dual Core (Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, Intel Core 2.0 GHz, AMD Athlon 3200+ or faster

I have a AMD Athlon 3200+, so that barely cuts it ... When playing Assasin's Creed a while ago for example my machine had little trouble with the graphics, but when lots of enemies (AI) are in the screen the game was very slow ...

ArmA2 will probably have lots of enemies ... :-/

Also, I have DDR1 400Mhz memory ... Not the fastest ...

I wouldn't know, I just downloaded the only that explicitly stated it supported English ...
Doesn't really matter, I just want to see what the gameplay is like ... (And if the game runs properly ...)

Daytime? What's that? Isn't that the long, scary, bright area that covers the earth every now and then?

I meant day-time (emphasis on the "-") which apparently was the wrong literal translation from the German "Tageszeit" which may or may not apply to the whole 24h day (which includes both the scary bright and scary dark time). So to avoid further confusion I'd better ask at which hours (i.e. 0000 to 2400) you intend to play..

Let me put it this way:

On Tuesday and Thursday I have to work from 0830 until 2200, on the rest of the week days until about 0830 until 1700.
Except on these times, I am available for ArmA2 Wink.

Btw, just got home, ArmA2 finished downloading ... installing it now ...

Bah, download was fubar, it's a password protected archive with dubious intructions to aquire the password (Call a phone number, etc.).
Also reports of a virus in the archive, although these reports were amde by idiots who can't even spell properly so I find those reports dubious also.

In any case, I will probably buy the game anyway ... Zeep's suggestion sounds even more cooler now that I've thought about it.
Operation Fkashpoint isn't such a great game gameplay-wise either (Not like inf anyway), and it was good fun playing that some time ago (Shame we didn't play more btw.) ... ArmA2 should be at least as good as OPF gameplay-wise ...

But now I want to know if the game runs properly ... I'm considering a upgrade ... Which isn't that expensive actually (Maybe about 200-250 euro for a good Phenom II X4 with mainboard&memory).

Problem is I just spent 550 euro on another system ... And 1000 euro for my laptop a few months ago ... All my money is going to computer hardware ... :-/ (Mainly because I was without a job&money for almost 3 years and all my hardware is/was so old it is/was falling apart)...
I also need to get my server fixed, which will cost money also ... :-/

Donations are welcome, I accept all major credit cards and paypal Wink

Jesus Christ, where do you work? Forced labor camp? Porn industry? Where I work doing more than 10h a day is prohibited by law - well, not that I've never worked more than 10h Wink.

Yeah OFP was some fun even though I only played it single player (at least as long as I didn't have to drive or fly). And yes, Zeeps suggestion is a great one, if you guys have space for a 4th guy I'd actually like to give it a try.

220 for an upgrade? Just post your account details here Mr. Green

stm needs the upgrade more than I do, he has an AGP videocard (!!)

Also, he will only play if the game runs with Wine on Linux ... :-/

So what? Gigabyte offers an AGP graphics card with a Radeon HD 4650 chip - not top notch [actually it probably sucks donkey butt from a gaming perspective Mr. Green] but then it's sub 100 so what do you expect from it.

Since Carpet failed to get his download to work I'll probably have a look at that game tomorrow; found two shops that are [more or less] on my way home and which have a suitably high probability of having the game in stock, so I'll try one today and [if today is a fail again] the other tomorrow - but since I go to the cinema today to watch Star Trek (yeah, I know, I'm sick) I won't have time for gaming today (no I WON'T play all night)

ATI sucks.

Also, you can get a good PCIe card for 100 euro.

S.M.A.P.R.A. Mr. Green (I went for an abrev. since I'll probably have to use it more often in the forseeable future)

Carpetsmoker wrote:

Funny, I'd always thought you were more on the nVidia hater side, since most people I know that own AMDs actually prefer ATI. Well, since I go for whoever has best performance I don't really care about brands. ATIs Mobility 9700 was better than any nVidia mobile GPU of that time, while nowadays I prefer the nVidias simply because (nearly) no-one builds reasonably powerful laptops with ATIs. Not that I don't like my SLI 8800M GTX pair though Mr. Green

Carpetsmoker wrote:

No argument here. And it'll most probably perform better than its AGP counterpart, but my point was, that AGP doesn't necessarily mean the card won't be able to play ArmA2..

EDIT:
Since no one posted I'll simply edit this one.
First ArmA2 Impression: Installation music was funky but a bit short so far Mr. Green (installation is still running btw..)

Well, as my computer died last week, I hope the new one i am going to build will be enough to play some of the newer games. I am thinking on a core i7 940 processor and a GTX285 GPU. I guess this should be enough (or not Razz). If not, I still could play INF on it Very Happy

Okay, very, very, very short very, very, very first impression - played about an hour or so, just the basic training and some free training that ended up in a hunting wildstock challenge with an AK74 (I bagged 8 cows and 3 goats, apparently wildstock is a rather wide term in eastern europe Mr. Green).

Graphics seem reasonable, though not as nice as on some screens so far (went with standard and reduced resolution a bit since it seemed a bit sluggish). It does seem to have a "blurred" effect to me though, like I have on the wrong glasses, not very wrong but a bit wrong.

Movement seems also rather reasonable, although a bit on the fast side (ran 60m in ~10s).

Sights of both AK74 and M16A4 with some reflex or red dot looked also rather nice, though zooming seems to be always an option. M16A4 three round burst is wrong by the way, fires always three rounds.

HUD seems to be reducable to bearable limits (or is already very reduced when selecting a higher difficulty than cadet).

Driving [a Hummvee] is still as crappy as in OPF Confused

Oh, yes, the speech [so far] is in English, written text in German. I wonder why they didn't offer an English text option as well.

That's it so far, don't give it too much weight though, I do seem to get a hard start with most games lately - I guess I'll can give better insights tomorrow or after the weekend. I do have to admit it both a bit disappointing and promising at the same time..

It's not an issue of speed, but of stability.
ATI drivers suck, they are unstable and generally crap, nowadays it's better than it used to be, but nVidia is still a whole lot better.
btw. ATI sucked long before they got bought out by AMD...

aarrghh, installation music is evil!

Expensive!
Whatever you do, don't buy a GTX295 though, they suck.

Also, I would buy an i7 920, while the 940 is faster, it's also lots more expensive ... From a price/quality POV the 920 does a lot better...
Also, I would go for an Intel mainboard (Such as DX58SO), many people seem to go for the Asus P6T, it's not a bad mainboard as such, but it has all these ``gamer gimicks'' ... Intel board seem more no-nonsense and solid.
Also, there's the issue of the 3(+1) memory banks v.s. the 6 memory banks ... Intel people feel very strongly that their design is much better because of better cooling ... (It is actually ... although not as much as they say).

Ehm ... anyway .. Sorry, this is kind of off-topic...

There's a patch to change it, not sure if it's official or not, but it's offered with many downloads of dubious legal status.

Funny, a friend of mine is ATI only buyer because he had driver troubles with a Geforce 256 (or so, it's a really, really old one), plus I didn't notice driver troubles with my Mobility 9700 back then - can't say anything about recent drivers though. Then again I noticed I have generally little compatibility issues with my systems, which I partly credit to buying laptops, since Dell does seem to do suitable testing for their more costy systems, fucking shame they probably won't continue their gaming systems, but leave this sector to Alienware - I'm not sure I like having an alien head on my computer..

Carpetsmoker wrote:

Since ArmA can be modded IIRC changing the text language can't really be illegal (the downloads most probaly are though). It's basically like those guys who wasted hours and hours of their life getting the German Oblivion translation right..

And to not get completely off-topic, something I forgot yesterday:
The mouse responsiveness is kinda strange; for one the sensitivity seems oddly high - I'm already near minimum and it's still fast. Plus it feels a bit "laggy" sometimes..
